The brick parish church

Description

The brick parish church was erected by Andrzej Tęczyński in the mid 16th century. It burnt down in 1617 and was rebuilt seven years later thanks to the efforts of the then parish priest, Father Stanisław Lisowicz. Since then the church is dedicated to the Finding of the Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle. It is most likely that during that renovation, the church gained the Lublin Renaissance style and its façade was ornamented with two towers. The church was consecrated on October 3, 1627, by the Archbishop of Lvov, Jan Próchnicki. The church was renovated about 1670. The renovation work, founded by the Grand Marshall of the Crown, Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, was headed by Tylman van Gameren. As a result of the works, the church obtained the shape of a three-nave basilica. Another reconstruction took place in the years 1729–30 and resulted in the church’s current form. It was founded by Elżbieta Sieniawska and August Czartoryski with his wife Zofia née Sieniawska. In the course of time, the local parish church also ran a school headed by the dean and a hospital for the poor.

The church is a kind of mausoleum of the Tęczyński family. It is known that the Tęczyński Chapel once existed in the northern part of the church, where the then owners of the town were buried. At present, the last representative of the family – Izabela née Tęczyńska Opalińska (died in 1667)– is buried in the crypt under the currently existing northern chapel (the original chapel has not been preserved until the present day). Her daughter, Zofia née Opalińska Lubomirska, is buried in the crypt under the southern chapel and her sarcophagus also features the Topór Coat of Arms of the Tęczyński Family.
