Route description

The trail takes you around an interesting and diverse terrain, which is particularly impressive when roses are in blossom. Apart from landscape assets, the trail encompasses monuments associated with the Second World War martyrology as well as many unique historical monuments dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, documenting the stormy history of the region. The trail also presents connections between Końskowola and its vicinity with the Czartoryski family.

Some sections of the trail may be hardly passable after a period of more intense rainfall, due to its loess base.

The black connecting trail (that is about 650 m long) takes you from National Road 17 to the starting point of the ride in the centre of Końskowola. The trail connects the yellow trail around the northern part of the county with the red trail.

At first, you follow the black trail markers down Krótka Street and then Pożowska Street. The Rose Trail begins at the intersection of Pożowska and Głęboka Streets, where an information board with the map of the route is located. You continue straight on along Pożowska Street, and after 200 m you pass by the main gate of the Lublin Agricultural Advisory Centre in Końskowola.

Using modern specialist knowledge and the latest scientific achievements, the Lublin Agricultural Advisory Centre in Końskowola cultivates and develops traditions commenced over 200 years ago by Princess Izabela Czartoryska. In 1804 she brought first gardeners from Italy to Końskowola and established gardens here. The Polytechnic and Agricultural-Forest Institute operated here since 1863, and was transformed into the Farming and Forestry Institute in 1869. This research-educational centre changed its name and structure a few more times in the course of time, until June of 1999, when several dispersed institutes were merged into the Voivodeship Agricultural Advisory Centre in Końskowola, and in 2004 it eventually received its current name.

You pass by the gate of the Experimental and Implementation Orchard (at 0.68 km). You can visit the orchard together with the Experimental and Implementation Field during the annual event called “The Lublin Agricultural Advisory Centre Open Doors Festival” which takes place on the last Sunday of June.

The charmingly named “Ekotrasa” [Eco-route] Didactic Path, promoting the environment protection is located on the Agricultural Advisory Centre premises. It was prepared for the organized groups visiting the centre, especially school children. It features an admirable herb garden, beautiful ground covers, an original rock garden and many other very interesting plant specimens. During a walk around the premises, you have an opportunity to see the technical infrastructure, which employs ecological solutions, such as solar thermal collectors or solar herb, flower and fruit dryers.

Less than 500 m later, you turn left before the level crossing onto the gravel road running parallel to the railway tracks. The trail continues along the railway tracks for the

next 2.5 km. It is worth knowing that the railway along which you ride was established 135 years ago.

The Nadwiślańska Railroad was designed as a structure of great significance in case of the outbreak of a war and therefore, its construction was prioritized. The railway was supposed to enable the transportation of supplies, ammunition, arms, and the army between the most important fortresses of the Kingdom of Poland: Warsaw, Modlin and Dęblin and the Russian fortresses in Volhynia: Łuck, Rovno and Dubno. Levelling of the ground, building embankments and laying the tracks began in the late 1874. The construction was completed in the record time of three years, on July 24, 1877. The main railway line, later called the Nadwiślańska Railway, was officially opened on August 17, 1877.

Continuing the ride, you pass by several tree- and ornamental shrub-nurseries, blueberry orchards and other orchards on the left. The gravel road turns into a narrow asphalt road after 1.4 km (at 2.5 km). After the next 700 m you pass by a white metal cross on the left, and 500 m later you turn left at the overpass. Riding on the wide asphalt road, you enter the village of Nowy Pożóg. You pass by numerous gardening advertisements and a pretty wooden house (at 3.85 km), and you leave Nowy Pożóg (at 4.38 km). The trail turns right at the cross, while you can admire other tree-nurseries on the left. A cellular phone mast is visible on the hill ahead of you, with a 300-metre-long drive leading to it. On the top of the hill, you turn right at the black metal cross (at 5.08 km). Soon, the asphalt road turns into a gravel road (at 5.19 km), and then into a field road (at 5.4 km). About 200 m later the gravel road turns left and a moment later an about two-metre-high slope appears on the right (at 6.04 km). You ride along the railway tracks again – the Rose Trail runs along the tracks until the level crossing. You enter the asphalt road (at 6.28 km) and about a kilometre later you arrive at the PKP Railway Station in Klementowice (at 7.23 km).

The historical wooden Klementowice Railway Station is situated halfway between the stations in Nałęczów and Puławy. The construction of the eclectic building lasted one year and it was completed in 1878. Although dilapidated and inconspicuous today, the building can tell many interesting stories. You can learn about the most fascinating stories, taking up the challenge of the “Stories with a Legend in the Background” Quest, which reveals numerous mysteries of the contemporary and old Klementowice.

A map with signposts is located near the railway station. According to the map, from this point you can get to Markuszów (which is 15 km away; first, follow the red trail until the level crossing, then go along the green trail and the black connecting trail, and in the end, follow the yellow trail called “In the Land of Jan Pock”), or to Kurów (which is 12 km away; follow the red trail until the level crossing and then continue along the green trail). You are 14 km away from the end of the Rose Trail. You ride on, passing by a wooden cross, placed by the oasis youth in 2004 (at 7.33 km), and pass by the entrance gate to the Maciej Rataj Agribusiness School Complex in Klementowice.

The history of the school dates back to 1922, when the School of Breeding and Agriculture, offering yearlong courses was established in Irenów near Dęblin. In 1938 it was transferred to Klementowice as the District School of Agricultural Training. During the Nazi German invasion, the courses were resumed in May 1940. The Nazi German authorities gave their permission for the continuation of studies, on the condition that the students would study only trade subjects. Despite these restrictions, the teachers of the time risked their life and also taught literature, history, geography, and acquainted the students with the contemporaneous affairs in the country and the world. Students’ attendance at school protected them from deportations to Germany for forced labour and allowed them to participate in the conspiracy. After the liberation, the school changed its character and name several times. Until 1947 it operated as a two-year School of Breeding and Agriculture, and then as a three-year Middle School of Agriculture. In 1948 it was transformed into the Agricultural-Cooperative High School and then in 1950 – into Technical School of Agricultural Accounting. Trade Agricultural School operated here since 1970, and as of the September of 1973, a three-year Technical School of Agriculture. Four years later, the school was renamed as the School of Agriculture Complex in Klementowice with the branches in Janowiec, Markuszów and Jastków. When in 1997 a new field of study appeared with a degree of technician in agribusiness, the school complex was renamed as the Agribusiness School Complex.

400 m later you reach the level crossing in Klementowice. According to the map with signposts located next to the level crossing, the green trail from Klementowice to Strzyżowice at the Wieprz River (the trail’s length is 46.78 km) starts here.

You proceed through the crossing and get to the other side of the railway tracks (at 7.78 km). The trail turns right behind the tracks and leads you parallel to the track-way. About 150 m behind the level crossing, you pass by a white roadside shrine topped with a cross, “Commemorating the Marian Vow Renewal 1656–1956” (at 7.93 km). After another 900 m you leave Klementowice and the main road turns left (at 8.94 km). You ride through Zakierzki (part of the village of Stok) and about 1.5 km later (counting from the bend) you turn left at the intersection near the massive lime tree growing next to a wooden cross (at 10.52 km). After 130 m you reach another intersection where the Amber Trail joins the red trail in Końskowola County (at 10.65 km). From then on both trails overlap on the stretch of 10.63 km.

You turn right at the intersection and head toward the Stocki Forest. According to the signposts with maps located here, if following the Amber Trail – you are 15 km away from Puławy, 715 km away from Hel, and 625 km away from Gdańsk. The fact that you are traversing the Rose Trail is confirmed by numerous plantations of these flowers, which you can admire along the way. Apart from roses, the very picturesque local hills feature abundance of tree- and ornamental shrub-nurseries and blueberry orchards.

You enter the Stocki Forest (at 11.32 km) and soon afterwards you go uphill. You turn right on the top of the elevation (at 12.14 km). You pass by a grapevine plantation on the right (at 12.3 km), and 700 m later you pass by a metal cross surrounded by three large maple trees. Continuing the ride, you leave the asphalt road and enter the gravel road (at 13.44 km), and reach the Battle in the Stocki Forest Monument located on the edge of the forest (at 13.55 km).

On May 24, 1945, the partisan concentration of Home Army–Armed Forces Delegation headed by Major Marian “Orlik” Bernaciak and supported by the unit of Czesław “Maks” Szlendak fought the largest battle of the anti-Soviet uprising. About 170 partisans were attacked by the NKVD and Department of Security secret police expedition of 700 men, equipped with armoured personnel carriers. After a daylong fight, the soldiers of “Orlik” won.

A sheltered rest area with an information board describing the tourist trails is located behind the monument. You proceed on the field road, at first along the edge of the forest, and then leaving it behind. The surrounding forests encircle the undulating fields and hills, forming a splendid and eye-pleasing landscape. You reach a trail junction: the two trails are joined by the third, black trail leading to the village of Parchatka (at 14.74 km).

The black trail, 3.80 km long, leads you to the green bicycle path running along the Vistula River embankment from Parchatka to Puławy. At first, you ride uphill for 100 m on the concrete slabs toward the asphalt road. 500 metres later, you reach a small cemetery and a monument commemorating the residents of Zbędowice, who were murdered on November 22, 1942. The list of victims encompasses 87 people, including one-year-old babies. The Nazi German units pacified the village in revenge for the residents’ support for the partisans. You continue and then turn right into a large ravine (that is almost 2 km long). Descending along the steep gorge, watch out on the slippery and occasionally destroyed surface. You leave the ravine, cross Route 824, and continue along the dike until you reach a green path, running along the Vistula River embankments to Puławy.

You turn right at the signpost and ride straight on all the time on the gravel road that from time to time is reinforced with concrete slabs or gravel. You pass by a medium voltage line several times, as the trail meanders around it. You continue straight on at the field crossroads (at 15.99 km). The road then turns slightly right toward the grove, which you pass by on the right and then you make a left turn (at 16.46 km). You ride under the overhead power line again and then proceed along the forest edge. You are surrounded on all sides by fields enclosed by the nearby forest walls. You ride toward the forest visible ahead of you, passing by picturesque forest ravines on the way. The route now runs on the field road located in a shallow (1.5 m deep) ravine. Riding along the ravine, you reach another ravine paved with concrete slabs (at 38.76 km), along which you go down to the village of Skowieszyn. You stop at the information board with a map and signposts, located before the intersection (at 18.38 km). According to the signpost, you are 273 km away from Kraków, and only 7 km away from Puławy. This is the site where the trails part ways: the Amber Trail turns left at the intersection, and the Red Rose Trail continues straight on.

In Skowieszyn you pass by three wooden houses standing next to one another on the left (at 18.54 km), and 100 m later you ride by another whitewashed wooden house with window shutters (at 18.64 km). You reach another intersection where you make a right turn (at 18.99 km). The Fire Department Station stands here, and a rest area is located 50 m to the left. Behind the intersection and a small bridge, you pass by a stork’s nest (at 19.04 km) and an ages-old log cabin. You will see five more houses like that within the next 300 metres.

You pass by an old wooden cross on the left (at 19.63 km) and ride under the already “familiar” overhead power line for the last time. The road turns left behind it (at 19.64 km), and you leave Skowieszyn. The route now runs along some more orchards, through the uncontrolled level crossing and a small bridge located behind it, and leads you to the village of Stara Wieś (at 20.27 km). It is worth taking a walk along the embankment promenade near the ponds in Stara Wieś.

The embankment promenade in Stara Wieś is a friendly and safe place of recreation and relaxation. This beautiful area is also family friendly. The lit boulevard runs around the developed water reservoirs and well-tended green areas.

About 200 m behind the level crossing, you turn right into Głęboka Street (at 20.3 km). From now on, you continue straight on until the end of the trail. You pass by a modest grey cross (at 20.68 km), and then proceed for 500 m among the fields, blueberry orchards, tree-nurseries and orchards. The Puławy Nitric Acid Plant is visible in the distance on the left (at 21.06 km). You reach the information board with a map, the starting point of your ride. This way you have completed the loop and your ride along the Rose Trail has come to an end.

While in Końskowola, it is worth seeing several of the local historical monuments and places of interest. The remnants of the manorial farm dating from the 18th century, together with the byre and granary are located in the immediate vicinity of the red trail.

Apart from the steward’s residence, the manorial farm in Końskowola also encompassed the houses of the clerks, houses and workshops of craftsmen of several dozen professions, three breweries, distillery, mills, storehouses, granary, stables and cowsheds.

The byre [Holendernia] was erected in the neo-Classical style by the manorial farm’s owner, Adam Jerzy Czartoryski in 1827 and was meant to house 180 head of cattle. The name of the byre [Holland byre] originated in the fact that the cattle bred on the local estate was imported from Holland. The southern part of the former byre was designated for stables. After the Second World War, the interior was divided into office spaces, storage rooms, workshop spaces and garages. The two-bay layout of the building was created and new window openings were made. The building is situated in the southeast part of Końskowola, along the western side of Pożoska Street.

The building adjoins from the west the Baroque granary built by the Czartoryski family in the late 18th century. The brewery, joined by an underground passage with the granary building, was located nearby. The brewery has not survived until the present day, but a legend about an allegedly lousy taste of the Końskowola beer has been immortalized in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel, The Deluge. The former building of the administrator’s house was located behind the distillery (it stands there until the present day, several hundred metres west from the granary). At the end of your visit in the former manorial farm, you should participate in the Discoverers’ Expedition and solve the “With His Grace Onufry of St. Ann’s to the Holland Byre” Quest.

Other historical monuments of Końskowola are described in this guide in the section on the yellow trail around Końskowola (see p. XXX), and they include the Parish Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle, the Hospital Church of St. Ann, the former hospital for the poor dating from the 16th century, the Tęczyński Manor, the former Town Hall, and the remnants of the Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery.

Szlak w większości prowadzi drogami polnymi i szutrowymi.
