Church of St. Adalbert in Wąwolnica

Description

The existence of the white stone Church of St. Adalbert in Wąwolnica dates back to the 15thcentury. The current building was erected in the years 1907–14 thanks to the parishioners’ donations. The cost estimate and design were made by Engineer Ksawery Dionizy Drozdowski. The new church is located on the church hill (formerly, the castle hill), on the site of the cemetery once adjacent to the old church and partially on the territory of the parish priest’s garden. Its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the axis of the former church. Since the walls of the new church were only one metre away from the walls of the old church, it was decided to demolish the old church, leaving only the chancel as the Chapel with a figure of Our Lady of Kębło. The church was consecrated in 1928, and in 2001 Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica. It is a neo-Gothic three-nave building made of red brick. The sacristy is adjacent to the chancel, while a tower built on a square plan stands next to the nave. The interior boasts the following altars, adjusted in style to the entire building: the high altar with a figure of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, and side altars with the paintings of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Theresa, St. Stanislaus Kostka, and St. Joseph. The musical choir boasts an organ with twenty ranks.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Kębło, located north of St. Adalbert’s Church, is a rebuilt chancel from the former Gothic church. As of 1700, the benevolent figure of Our Lady of Kębło have been featured here. The sculpture, dating from the mid 15th century and made of linden wood, represents Our Lady with Baby Jesus. The chapel houses the Regional Museum presenting the history of Wąwolnica.
