The Arian Tower

Description

The Tower was erected in the years 1520–30. It is the only Gothic-Renaissance structure of this type in the Lublin Region. Initially, it served as a residence of the Wojciechów owners. A Calvinistic congregation used it in the years 1550–98. In the early 17th century, the subsequent owner of the village, Paweł Orzechowski of the Rogala Coat of Arms, built a convenient palace north of the tower, and designated the tower building for a granary. In 1910 Natalia and Józef Popławski transferred the dilapidated tower to the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments of the Past, which began the tower’s renovation in 1911. The renovation works headed by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz were interrupted by the war. The second attempt at the renovation met the same fate in 1939. The successful extensive renovation began only in 1972. This time it was completed without interruption and three years later, it became the office of the County Culture Centre. At present, the tower also houses the Museum of Blacksmithing, the Wojciechów Regional Museum, County Public Library and the Polish Blacksmith Association.

The Museum of Blacksmithing, located on the highest floor of the tower, is the only museum of this type in Poland. It features over 1,000 exhibits of blacksmith’s craft, created by blacksmith masters from Poland and abroad. Here you can find out why a horseshoe brings luck, hear interesting stories about blacksmith’s work, or tap a blacksmith’s march on the anvil. Museum is open Mon–Fri 9am-5pm, Sat–Sun 10am-5pm (Between October and May the museum is closed on Sundays).

The Wojciechów Regional Museum is located on the third floor of the tower. Its interior is stylized as a Wojciechów cottage from the 1920s and 1930s. It features objects used by village residents in every day life as well as exhibits documenting the history of Wojciechów, including a model of the 14th -century mediaeval settlement and findings from the archaeological excavations. A Folk Art Gallery, where you can mint a souvenir coin, is located at the museum. Open daily 10am-5pm (Oct-Apr closed on Sundays).
