neo-Classical Palace

Description

The late neo-Classical Palace dating from the second half of the 19th century was erected by Count Jan Jezierski of the Nowina Coat of Arms according to the design by Józef Dietrich. Bohdan Broniewski purchased the estate in the early 20th century. After his death, the palace was inherited by Zygmunt Broniewski, veteran of the First World War and the Polish-Soviet War, the later main commanding officer of National Armed Forces. After the Soviet Army’s invasion of Garbów in 1944, the palace housed the frontline military hospital, and then the militia school. The south wing later housed the Citizens’ Militia Station, while the remaining rooms were taken over by private tenants and the County Peasant Self-Help Cooperative, which organized here offices, a store and storage rooms. In the 1950s the middle part of the palace housed the Culture Centre (until 1957). Then, the local branch of the Lublin management board of Agricultural Clubs and the county community formed a founding committee, which aimed to establish the Health Care Cooperative. After dislodging of the former tenants, the extensive renovation of the palace commenced. At that point it was in a deplorable condition, the drainpipes were missing, so water from the roof came down along the walls and corners of the building, which began to crack. The roof plate was entirely replaced; central heating was installed, as was the water supply and sewage systems. The renovation lasted two years and was ultimately completed in 1963. Although the cooperative existed for only 10 years (until 1973) its goals have been taken over and continued by the local health care centre, which has been located in the palace until the present day.
