The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Garbów

Description

The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Garbów was erected in the east side of the village on a small elevation. The construction began in the early 1908, thanks to the efforts of the then parish priest, Father Stanisław Abramowicz. It was possible thanks to the well-disposed attitude of the owner of Garbów – Bohdan Broniewski, who transferred the brick from the nearby brickyard, most likely free of charge. The design, which was corrected twice, was made by Józef Pius Dziekoński. Only its third version (together with the cost estimate) was approved by the tsar authorities. The construction was completed in 1912. In the interwar period the church was renovated after the war damages, and the bullet shells were built in the elevation. The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus was consecrated in 1930. After the Second World War, during the renovation, electrification was conducted as well. In the 1980s the roofs, towers (75 m tall) and the interior of the church were renovated, thanks to the efforts of Father Stanisław Wąsik, and later, it underwent an extensive conservation and all the elements of the interior design were gilded.

The church is built on the Latin cross plan. It is a three-nave interior and sacristies are adjacent to the chancel. The height elements of the church are marked by the front towers and the slender flèche of the church located at the crossing of the naves. The Stations of the Cross are placed under the windows of the chancel, the transept and the naves, made in 1933 by Zofia Trzcińska-Kamińska.The lancet windows partially fill the figure stained-glass windows, which in the chancel represent SS. Thomas and Adalbert. The remaining stained-glass windows are ornamented with floral and geometrical motifs.

The entire interior is made mostly of oak, while the sculptures and small ornamental elements are made of linden, and then covered with polychrome and partially gilded. Most of the furnishings date from the interwar period. The high altar placed in an apse is also made of black oak. Its form resembles the Gothic cathedral cross-section. The two paintings featured here include The Transfiguration of Jesus, and a painting dedicated to St. Adalbert. The east pillar of the transept features a pulpit, while the opposite side features a baptismal font and a nativity set (made by Aleksander Fijałkowski in 1962) with the natural-size figures that move mechanically.
