Witowska Wola

Description

Until the second half of the 15th century, the present village of Końskowola had been called Witowska Wola. In the course of time, the name was changed to Konińska Wola, after the name of the then owner, Jan of Konin. The present name appeared only in the 19th century. The history of Końskowola dates back to the 14th century and to the Koniński family of the Rawa Coat of Arms. The first recorded owner of the village, called Witowska Wola, was Męcin of Konin, who initiated the erection of the church and the establishment of the parish in the late 14th century. Końskowola with the neighbouring villages passed down successively into the hands of Dziersław of Witowice and his sons. The name change of the village to Konińska Wola is associated with one of his sons, Jan. On June 8, 1532, the next owner of Końskowola, Andrzej Tęczyński, obtained a promise from King Sigismund the Old of granting a town charter to the village.

In the course of time, Końskowola was the property of several mighty noble families of Tęczyńskis, Opalińskis, Lubomirskis, Sieniawskis and Czartoryskis. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the town was home to Grzegorz Piramowicz, Franciszek Zabłocki, Franciszek Dionizy Kniaźnin, and Józef Orłowski. The tsar confiscated Końskowola and other family estates of the Czartoryski family as a punishment for their participation in the November Uprising.

In 1870 Końskowola lost the town charter. Nonetheless, the period of economic prosperity of the village falls on the late 19th century, thanks to the manufacturing and exporting of the textile products. The process was hindered by the outbreak of the First and Second World Wars. Only in the 1960s, Końskowola became an enterprising centre of plant nurseries.
