Wąwolnica

Description

Wąwolnica is one of the oldest villages in the Lublin Region. The legendary Prince Krak is believed to have founded Wąwolnica, although the first written record of the village dates from the 11th century. A fortified settlement existed here in the 13th century with a parish since the 14th century. During the time of King Casimir the Great (1333-1370), the settlement became a town surrounded by walls with a castle erected on a hill.

In the course of time, the town declined (after one of the fires), therefore, it once again received a town charter in 1567. After the January Uprising, it finally lost the town charter. After the Second World War, a strong anti-Communist underground operated in the vicinity, with the support of the local population. On May 2, 1946, Secret Services pacified the village, burning and destroying the estates of 197 families. At present, Wąwolnica is a well-known pilgrimage centre. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kębło attracts large numbers of pilgrims from all over Poland. The tradition of the cult of Our Lady of Kębło dates back to the end of the 13th century – the period of Tatar invasions of Poland. It is worth solving the “From Krak to the Sacred” Quest.
