Cemetery in Końskowola

Description

What is the origin of the Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery in Końskowola? Caring about the economic development of the village, the Czartoryski family brought here about 300 craftsmen from Germany, mostly from Saxony. Most of the newcomers were weavers, and thanks to this move, Końskowola soon became a significant centre of cloth manufacturing. Although after the fall of the November Uprising of 1830-1831, many of the Saxonians left Końskowola (and moved among others to Łódź), still a branch of the Lublin Evangelical-Augsburg Parish was established for the local population in 1842. According to the census of 1909, out of 4,900 population of Końskowola, 230 people constituted a German minority. The remnants of the necropolis remind us of their existence. In July of 2011, a group of volunteers from Austria, Germany and Poland cleaned the cemetery together.

It is adjacent to the so-called New Jewish Cemetery in Końskowola. The cemetery was established in the 18th century. At present, the remnants of the cemetery include an unfenced land with an area of 2 ha, without a single tombstone left. The only surviving matsevah (tombstone) is featured in the PTTK Regional Museum in Puławy at Czartoryskich Street, in the former building of the St. Charles Borromeo Hospital (about 300 m southwest of the Czartoryski Palace).
